Is Your Brand Message Fuzzy? An Indianapolis Business Owner's Guide to Getting Crystal Clear

We’ve been working through ways to fortify your Indiana business, from financial health checks to re-engaging past customers. Now, let’s tackle something that could be silently holding you back: a weak brand message.

If you find yourself constantly explaining what you do, or if your marketing feels like it’s disappearing into a void, the problem might not be your product—it might be your messaging. In a competitive market, a fuzzy message is invisible. A clear one is magnetic.

Think of your brand message as your 3-second handshake. It needs to be confident, clear, and memorable. The good news? Sharpening it is something you can start today.

Step 1: Find Your "Who" and "Why"

Before you can tell your story, you need to know who you’re telling it to and why it matters.

  • DIY Action: Define Your One Ideal Customer.

    • Get specific. Instead of “women in Indianapolis,” think “Indianapolis moms in their 30s who value organic, locally-made products for their families.” Give them a name. What are their frustrations? What do they value? This focus makes your messaging infinitely more relatable.

  • DIY Action: Craft Your “One-Liner.”

    • Can you explain what you do and who you help in a single, compelling sentence? This is your elevator pitch.

    • Formula: I help [Your Ideal Customer] achieve [Their Desired Outcome] by providing [Your Unique Service/Product].

    • Before: “I do graphic design.”

    • After: “I help overwhelmed Indianapolis small business owners attract their dream clients by creating clean, professional logos and brands they’re proud to show off.”

Step 2: Audit Your Visual Voice

Your messaging isn’t just words—it’s everything people see. Inconsistency creates confusion and erodes trust.

  • DIY Action: Conduct a “Consistency Check-Up.”

    • Look at your website, your Facebook page, your Instagram feed, and your business cards. Do they all use the same 2-3 colors and 1-2 fonts? Is your logo displayed clearly and consistently? If not, your brand can feel messy and unprofessional.

  • DIY Action: Create a Simple “Brand Cheat Sheet.”

    • On a single document, write down your:

      • Primary Colors (Hex codes if you have them! For example, my teal is #04BAB4 and my orange is #F17122)

      • Primary Fonts

      • Your One-Liner from Step 1

    • Refer to this sheet anytime you create a new piece of marketing to ensure a cohesive look and feel.

Step 3: Speak Their Language (The "You" Test)

Your website and marketing should be a conversation focused on your customer, not a monologue about yourself.

  • DIY Action: Run the “You” Test on Your Website.

    • Go to your homepage and count how many times you see “I,” “we,” or “our” versus “you” and “your.”

    • Flip the Script: Change “We are a family-owned Indianapolis bakery” to “You’ll taste the difference in our family-owned, Indianapolis-baked goods.” See the shift? It instantly becomes about the customer’s experience.

  • DIY Action: Lead with Benefits, Not Features.

    • A feature is what your product is. A benefit is what it does for your customer.

    • Feature: “We use accounting software.”

    • Benefit: “You’ll finally have clear, stress-free financial clarity, so you can focus on growing your business.”

    • Benefits connect on an emotional level and answer the customer’s silent question: “What’s in it for me?”

You've Clarified Your Message... Is Your Brand Ready to Amplify It?

Doing this DIY work is a huge step. It gives you the strategic foundation for all your marketing. But what if you did the audit and realized your visuals don’t match your new, clear message? What if your website is working against you?

If you’re thinking:

  • “My one-liner is strong, but my logo doesn’t reflect it.”

  • “I know my brand colors should be consistent, but I don’t have an eye for design.”

  • “My messaging is clear, but my website is still confusing to navigate.”

…then it’s time to bring in a professional to bring your sharp new message to life.
